Biography
I've always loved to sing. It seems I'm usually humming or singing something throughout each day. My daughter just recently complained that I turn everything she says into a song. I just can't help myself when a song pops into my head. And if it's not a song I already know, I tend to make one up.
It wasn't until about ten years ago that I started playing music with friends. My sister-in-law, Janet, had a dulcimer, guitar, mandolin and fiddle, and she was in various stages of proficiency with each of them. I became interested in the bluegrass and old-time music she was playing and decided I needed to learn some guitar chords. It didn't take long to learn a chord or two, enough to accompany myself. Bluegrass jams helped me learn how to play politely with others and just have a good time. Janet, myself, and some friends started getting together to play music weekly, and we eventually started playing out some although I had sworn that I would never sing in front of anyone (I had quite a case of stage fright). I obviously learned to get past the fear and people seemed to like the sound of my voice, though I didn't really think it was so special. Now a days, I don't try to understand why. People like my singing and I'm happy to share my music.
Shortly after my daughter was born, I wrote my first song…a simple little ditty about her. A few months later, another song showed up. Like many songwriter's, I found song writing to be a great form of therapy! And as I have used music and song writing to express my feelings, I find that there is always someone else who can relate to the songs I've written. That's the most rewarding part about sharing music and songs with people. With every song I've shared, I know it has touched someone, somewhere.
After about two and a half years of work, I have completed my debut album, "IN THE CORNER". "Linda culls from a wide variety of musical influences to assemble a recording of stunning beauty and candor. Her voice is unforgettable in its purity and bell-like clarity." I have written five songs on this album. I'd like to think the other songs all chose me. They all resonated with me in one way or another, perhaps from the beauty of the melody, or the message in the lyrics or, both of those things.
Over the past several years I have played music with a variety of groups playing various styles of music. It seems I have found my niche in the folk music scene, drawing from the influences of bluegrass, old-time, celtic, traditional, and contemporary folk music. Currently I am involved with two bands. The Vagaband is a four member string band playing old-time, traditional, bluegrass and folk songs. Deep & Simple consists of three members performing more modern folk songs along with many original songs written by the group's members. I'm happy to say that my 9 year old daughter has been joining our performances recently with some great rythym. She also plays a great kazoo! Come join us sometime.
